Alienoid Starmonica EP
(Pet Rock/EMI)
This is more like it. A four-track opening shot from ex-Beta Banders John MacLean and Robin Jones with their old mucker Gordon Anderson (AKA Lone Pigeon) that bodes very, very well indeed. They have oodles of fun mucking about with filmic effects and sci fi atmosperics surrounding a core of Summer of Love '60s pop.
'Hey Leanne' (say it aloud fast) is a lilting country'n'western ode trapped in a UFO with the Aphex Twin and Emerson, Lake & Palmer before mutating into 'Only Waiting', which could be a lost song from the Beatles LSD phase. 'Robot Man' seems to have escaped from The Monkees movie 'Head' and closing number, 'Ionas (Look For Space)' recollects when the Stones headed '2000 Light Years from Home'. The Aliens are a full-on three man psychedelic revival, and about time to.
